Feels good to get back into the swing of things... in the way of exercise. I hate "excuses"... but this nasty antibiotic I'm on made me act like a ravenous animal this week. By volume I ate more than I should have... but I did my best to keep it as healthy as possible. I did falter a few times... but overall, did ok.

Next week the ball will start rolling again...

I did learn a lot about "heart rate zone" training this week. And it worked for me. So will do more of that this next week!!!

Time to purge...

Thiis past weekend we cleaned out the pantry and the freezer.

Our mission? to get rid of food stuffs that we shouldn't be eating. After 6 weeks of eating healthy, remaining disciplined on portion size, and excercising regularly we were well beyond the temptations of the "cookie monster" or the "salt lick". It was just time. We were determined to move beyond the things that have kept us unhealthy. Unhealthy food stuffs is just one of our problems...

So, it was time to purge...

And purge we did! Of course we also found some food that had expired... and so we tossed some of it. But the rest of it? That was a tough decision. Beng the frugal people we are we didn't want to just toss it. But it also felt a little weird getting rid of food that we thought was unhealthy... and simply handing it off for someone else to eat the unhealthy food.

So, we compromised. We tossed some of the real bad stuff and then shared the rest with some family members who were in town for a work project. (After all, we WERE burning extra calories while working, right?!) We delivered beef franks, hot dog buns and cans of chili ... and told them if they didn't eat it they could share it or toss it - we didn't want to know. We took them a frozen pizza... which I believe they had the next night with a big salad. We gave away half of our stash of applewood smoked bacon (our FAVORITE kind)... and they enjoyed it at breakfast time for the rest of the week.

We ridded up and made room for healthy food. We restocked our freezer with what we considered to be better: frozen Ono and Mahi Mahi, boneless/skinless chicken breasts, edamame snack bags, frozen veggie stir fry mix, frozen sweet corn, frozen ground turkey. Keeping these items on hand, albeit frozen, were smarter choices.

It's not a diet... it's a new way of life.

stepping it up...

On Saturday June 4, 2011 my husband stated he was ready to start eating healthier... coming home from a vacation a day earlier (where we ate anything/everything we wanted) and feeling the effects... he was ready to lose some of that belly fat and not feel so tired all of the time.

Admittedly, this was a moment I've been waiting for ... for a very long time!

What we did next:
- As you can imagine, we bought salad greens and more vegetables and healthier snacks at our next grocery visit.
- He got on the recumbent bike in the back room (nearly every day for at least 20-30 mins).
- We bought a weight scale for the bathroom
- We took the food scale out of storage
- We cleaned up the BBQ and started grilling out every night
- He put himself on a 2,500 calorie/day diet
- He created an Excel spreadsheet (and the subsequent food/calorie database to rely on)
- We started a vegetable garden (now growing 3 variations of tomatoes, poblano and anaheim peppers, garlic, red and yellow bell peppers... to add to our already growing herb garden: thyme, oregano, dill, parsley, cilantro, chives, bunching onions and taragon).
- We decided we needed to increase our protein intake so our muscles could rebuild following exercises.

We got our "healthy" on...

But it has become so much more than that. In the past two weeks he decided that not only did he want to eat better, exercise more, lose weight and be healthier... instead he also wanted to get serious about it. So what did he do next?! He purchased all of the peraphanalia required to go through the P90X program!!!

We now have some really cool lookin' dumbbells in the living room, a pull-up bar across the dining room door jam and my craft room has turned into workout central. (How DID that happen overnight without my approval?!)

Last night we watched the intro to P90X and the first workout routine... holy S*%#!!! (pardon me!) It's an extreme program (yes, that's obviously what the "X" stands for)! They warn against people with knee / back injuries from doing the program - and for once I was grateful that I don't have any cartiledge in my right knee! (HA!!!)

So where do we go from here?!
- Since the two of us will now (FINALLY) be eating similar (and much healthier) foods, I think I will be on a similar food plan as the one he puts together for himself.
- But he (for the record, a crazy man) will do his P90X while I continue with my upper body weights and recumbent bike riding.

Report
- Losing Weight: In the past 2 weeks he has dropped nearly 10 pounds and I have dropped about 5 pounds!
- Gaining Life: Our time together has increased by a shared desire to learn about healthy shopping/eating, hanging out by the grill together, spending time at local farmers' markets and revelling in the growth occuring in our veggie garden.

A Confession and a Promise
Doing this on my own (exercising and eating relatively healthy during the day - but then eating like we normally did for dinners/weekends) was difficult. My weight yo-yo'd, along with my desire. But with my husband by my side we can do this together! We're a team ... and while we are doing different exercises on a daily basis we are encouraging each other and learning how to live this new life together! We've promised to each other that we'll support each other through these attempts and cheer each other on...

What now?
Yesterday we purchased two books that are going to take us even further... he's reading "Nutrition for Dummies" (yes, a basic foundation... but quite the necessary refresher), and me: "The Glycemic Index Diet for Dummies". This will help us put together a hybrid nutrition plan, one for each of us. We need to set some goals, create a comprehensive grocery list and find about 2 dozen meal plans/recipes to start with. In about a month we will revisit our goals, plan, etc and see what needs tweaking.

Needless to day, we're ready to BRING IT!

It's time to commit to this discipline again. And even though it's not the beginning of the month... well, it still means it is time for a weigh-in and measurement report. (Granted I've missed a few months... but this is a slow process.)

Two weeks ago it was the sinus infection that got the best of me. This week it was the allergic reaction to the penicillin that got the best of me. I DO NOT like hives... let it be know, I DO NOT! It felt SOOO good to get back in the gym this morning. <--- And THAT feels weird to say... I'll do better this week...

High Intensity Interval Training

What is HIIT?

For a short blurb from Wikipedia: it's a form of sprint interval training ... "it is an exercise strategy that is intended to improve performance with short training sessions. HIIT is a form of cardiovascular exercise which is beneficial to burning fat in a short and intense workout. Usual HIIT sessions may vary from 9–20 minutes. The original protocol set a 2:1 ratio for work to recovery periods. For example, a runner would alternate 15-20 seconds of hard sprinting with 10 seconds of jogging or walking." Additionally, "The number of repetitions and length of each depends on the exercise. The goal is to do at least six cycles, and to have the entire HIIT session last at least fifteen minutes and not more than twenty."

About two weeks ago I tested this out... and what a workout it was! I have talked with a number of people who use this type of training and they love it too. After talking with a fitness friend of mine I decided to give it a go after understanding it a bit more.

When I "HIIT it" here is what I do on the recumbent bike.

I warm up for 2-3 minutes at the lowest resistance setting on the cycle. At the end of the warm-up I change the resistance to a setting of 3. For the next 10 mins or so I switch back and forth between sprinting for 20 seconds and riding at my normal pace for a minute. After 10 mins I ride at my normal pace for 3-5 minutes... and then increase the resistance to a setting of 5. Then I repeat the 10 min cycle of 20 sec/1 min intervals. After the 2nd set of 10 mins I will again ride at my normal pace for 3-4 mins... and then increase the resistance to a setting of 7. Before I finish up I will lower the resistance ... and it's VERY important to have a cool-down time at the end of at least 3-5 minutes.

HIIT is where it's at for me.... I love this!

My workout goes by so much faster. I'm a bit more focused and can push myself harder.

Currently I am doing this 2 times a week... with mixed upper body weights and ab exercises. On "off" days (the other 2-3 days a week) I just do a normal ride on the recumbent bike.

I can't wait to see the results... but I will.

It may take the rest of my life... at least I'm moving in the right direction!

switching up the morning routine...

I tried something new today... I stepped up the workout efforts...

My typical morning ride: 45 minutes on the recumbent bike, gym at work. Here's how...
- In the first 15-20 minutes I work my heart rate up by increasing in resistance from 3-9, in two level increments.
- At the mile mark I increase resistance.
- Once I get to res9 I hang there for 2 miles and then slowly decrease resistance.
- The last 25 mins of the ride is at res3, moving rather fast.

I'm able to get my heart rate up pretty quickly, work those lungs and then hang out and focus on cardio.

How I changed it up today... today I focused on sprint intervals.

I followed the same format (increasing in resistance from 3-9 right up front). But ... after 1 1/2 minutes I would sprint-cycle for 20 seconds. Then I would go back to my normal speed (attempt to catch my breath), for about 1 1/2 minutes. Then sprint again. repeat...

According to dailymile.com (after punching in my weight, heart rate, effort level, etc) I burned approximately 953 calories!!! WHAT?!

And to think... when I walked into the gym this morning I almost turned around and just hit the showers.

It sure felt good to "show the morning who was boss" {Sara - thanks for the inspiration!}

two flights, three celebrations, one realization....

{celebration #1}
I walked a flight of stairs today...

{celebration #2}
I walked a second flight of stairs... and didn't realized I had walked the first flight until I got to the top of the second flight. (for the last 5 years or so I have avoided stairs and used my lack of knee cartiledge as an excuse... but the heavy breathing was the real embarrassing part.)

{celebration #3}
When I got to the top I wasn't out of breath!!!

one realization... I should walk more flights of stairs!

She was proud of me!

Today I had the annual appt with the OBGYN... one of the first things she wanted to talk about was how I was losing weight!

When I started this journey I was 293 lbs! Yes, nearly 300 lbs. I remember the feeling of despair I felt when I first went over 200 lbs. Well, I was fearfully close to 300... and I was in denial.

Briefly I told my Dr what I've been doing and she was proud of me! SHE WAS PROUD OF ME!!!

Then we went on to talk about hormones and other fun things... I'm sure you wanted to be there.
