Time to purge...

Thiis past weekend we cleaned out the pantry and the freezer.

Our mission? to get rid of food stuffs that we shouldn't be eating. After 6 weeks of eating healthy, remaining disciplined on portion size, and excercising regularly we were well beyond the temptations of the "cookie monster" or the "salt lick". It was just time. We were determined to move beyond the things that have kept us unhealthy. Unhealthy food stuffs is just one of our problems...

So, it was time to purge...

And purge we did! Of course we also found some food that had expired... and so we tossed some of it. But the rest of it? That was a tough decision. Beng the frugal people we are we didn't want to just toss it. But it also felt a little weird getting rid of food that we thought was unhealthy... and simply handing it off for someone else to eat the unhealthy food.

So, we compromised. We tossed some of the real bad stuff and then shared the rest with some family members who were in town for a work project. (After all, we WERE burning extra calories while working, right?!) We delivered beef franks, hot dog buns and cans of chili ... and told them if they didn't eat it they could share it or toss it - we didn't want to know. We took them a frozen pizza... which I believe they had the next night with a big salad. We gave away half of our stash of applewood smoked bacon (our FAVORITE kind)... and they enjoyed it at breakfast time for the rest of the week.

We ridded up and made room for healthy food. We restocked our freezer with what we considered to be better: frozen Ono and Mahi Mahi, boneless/skinless chicken breasts, edamame snack bags, frozen veggie stir fry mix, frozen sweet corn, frozen ground turkey. Keeping these items on hand, albeit frozen, were smarter choices.

It's not a diet... it's a new way of life.
